WASHINGTON, D.C. – September 18, 2019 – Good oral health and good overall health go hand in hand. That’s why dental care is so important, and why dental health plans work hard to ensure patients have access to the care they need. In a new study released today by Global Strategy Group on behalf of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), patients are overwhelmingly satisfied with their dental coverage – and around 80% report their benefits give them access to high-quality care.
Key findings were that dental coverage:
- Offers Broad Networks, High Quality, and Is User Friendly: More than 80% of patients stated that their dental plans made it easy for them to find an in-network dentist or specialist. Their plan also helped them get a dental appointment in a timely fashion, was easy to use, and let them choose a dentist that best fits their needs.
- Allows Easy Access to Regular, Preventive Check-Ups: Nearly 90% of patients reported that their dental coverage allows them to get regular, preventive care and cleanings that prevent gum disease and cavities.
- Protects Oral Health and Covers Unexpected Costs: Approximately half of all patients say their dental insurance preserves their health. They also believe their oral health would deteriorate without it. And they would be unable to pay for expensive, unexpected procedures like crowns, root canals, or fillings.
- Provides Financial Security for the Whole Family: Most parents who responded said their dental plan allows them to get specialized care for their children. Their plan also eases concerns about paying for procedures like braces or wisdom teeth removal.
“There is a direct correlation between oral health and physical health,” said Tom Meyers, AHIP Vice President of Product Policy. “Proper dental care can help prevent chronic disease and reduce medical costs, which is why this type of coverage is so valuable to millions of patients and their families.”
Nearly 170 million Americans rely on dental insurance to cover dental services like diagnostic, preventative, and restorative care.
