AHIP’s comprehensive report offers a by-the-numbers look of how the industry expands coverage, creates jobs, and builds a healthy economy in each state and across the country

WASHINGTON, D.C. – America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) today released Health Coverage: State-to-State 2019, detailing the important role health insurance providers play – covering families and driving the economy – in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

“Insurance providers have deep roots in local communities across America. We not only provide coverage and peace of mind for millions of Americans, but also provide challenging, well-paying job opportunities with benefits that support and sustain local economies,” said Matt Eyles, president and CEO of AHIP. “As we expand coverage and jobs to more places, we continue to find innovative ways to get Americans the care they need when they need it, at a cost they can afford.”

Each state’s report details how many lives are covered by each type of plan (e.g., Medicaid, Employer Group, Individual, Medicare Advantage), the number of employees as well as the average wages and state taxes contributed.

Together, the health insurance providers analyzed:

  • Cover more than 170 million Americans.*
  • Directly or indirectly employ more than 1.5 million people.
  • Contribute more than $20 billion in state premium taxes

*Consumer enrollment statistics for large group, small group, and individual market plans, as well as the list of five plans that cover the most people in each state, does not include self-funded coverage by employers. According to Kaiser Family Foundation, about 60% of employees who are covered are in a plan that is fully or partially self-funded.

According to the US Census, about 295 million have health care coverage, while about 217 million of them have coverage through a health insurance provider.
