Washington, D.C. – April 6, 2022 – On the latest episode of The Next Big Thing in Health, AHIP President and CEO Matt Eyles and co-host Laura Evans were joined by Amanda Goltz, US Healthcare Lead, Worldwide Public Sector Healthcare Venture Capital and Startups at Amazon Web Services. The discussion covered a wide range of topics, including improving the patient experience through technology and modernizing the health care system.
Goltz spoke about the need for better data to improve patient outcomes:
“We're seeing this huge emphasis on the ‘what happened’ data. The movement towards real world data… and the inclusion of real-world data end points in trials is a big signal, to me, that regulatory agencies are starting to take [patient outcomes] seriously… I think value-based care is only as good as the measurements, and we're not yet measuring what inputs went to what outputs… so we're going to have to get really smart at measuring what happened, as we measure what was done.”
Goltz also spoke about the need for meaningful change across the health care system:
“As long as we keep thinking in simplistic ways [about health care], we won't make the meaningful change that we need to save lives. The system itself has a lot of terrible incentives such that each player - pharma, patient, provider, purchaser, and payer - acting completely rationally, will create incredible negative externalities… So I wish people understood that so we could really look at the system and what needs to change.”
Other topics covered included the promise of virtual care, as well as the role Amazon plays in helping health care startups realized their promise.
