WASHINGTON, D.C. – Matt Eyles, president and CEO of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), issued this statement following the Administration’s announcement of a nationwide effort to encourage everyone who has recovered from COVID-19 and has been symptom-free for at least 14 days to donate plasma. This plasma will be used to help other patients recover from COVID-19.
“Since COVID-19 first impacted our nation, we’ve seen ‘ordinary’ Americans do extraordinary things. Seemingly overnight, our country’s doctors, nurses, hospital personnel, emergency medical services workers, and public health leaders transformed into heroes, putting the health of the patients and communities they serve ahead of their own and in spite of very serious risks to themselves and their families. Our truckers, grocers, and manufacturers are working overtime to keep America supplied and fed. Health insurance providers are working with partners across our communities to ensure access to much-needed care and services. And millions of Americans are checking on friends, neighbors, and loved ones to offer support or a helping hand.
“With limited treatment options currently available, blood plasma may offer a potential way to help patients fight coronavirus. That’s why America’s health insurance providers join in strongly encouraging anyone who has recovered from COVID-19 and has been symptom-free for at least 14 days to donate their plasma.
“COVID-19 continues to present new challenges every day. And with today’s new challenges come new opportunities for everyday Americans to become the heroes we so desperately need by donating their blood plasma. We are all in this together. And together we can—and will—defeat the COVID-19 crisis.”
