WASHINGTON, D.C. – Matt Eyles, president and CEO of AHIP, issued this statement as new data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) about Medicare Advantage choices available during the upcoming Medicare annual open enrollment period reveal that average premiums for Medicare Advantage plans in 2022 will drop to $19 per month, compared to $21.22 in 2021:
“About 27 million seniors and people with disabilities choose Medicare Advantage because it delivers better services, better access to care, and better value. Today’s data release from CMS shows that the Medicare Advantage program continues to make coverage and care more accessible and affordable, even as we continue to overcome the global COVID-19 pandemic.
“Medicare Advantage offers all the benefits covered by original Medicare – such as preventive health screenings and vaccines, physician visits and hospital care – while also offering additional benefits like capping out-of-pocket costs; providing integrated, affordable prescription drug coverage; covering dental, health and vision care; and covering over-the-counter items. Through the COVID-19 crisis, Medicare Advantage plans took decisive action to address social health needs with services like healthy food deliveries and transportation access. And with nearly half of all eligible racial and ethnic minorities choosing Medicare Advantage, the program remains an essential partner in improving health equity in our communities.
“Medicare Advantage is the leading example of a public-private partnership that works. As Congress continues to work toward budget reconciliation, we urge them to protect Medicare Advantage so that it can continue to improve the health and financial stability of the millions of Americans it serves.”
