Washington, D.C. – (December 12, 2020) – Matt Eyles, president and CEO of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) issued this statement following the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) emergency use authorization of the nation’s first COVID-19 vaccine:

Vaccines save lives and are essential to overcoming the COVID-19 crisis. We applaud the FDA for its swift award of emergency use authorization for America’s first COVID-19 vaccine to power our nation toward recovery. The agency’s robust, rapid process and commitment to scientific rigor have been essential to the availability of a safe and effective vaccine that Americans deserve.

This vaccine is an important example of how essential strong partnerships are between the public sector and private market. Together, we can conquer obstacles and speed innovation to improve health and saves lives. Health insurance providers will continue to work with federal, state and local leaders to execute successful strategies to ensure Americans get this much-needed vaccine, particularly in communities of color where health inequities have led to more dire consequences from the virus. We will also work with key leaders and other organizations to educate consumers and our enrollees on the importance of getting vaccinated to encourage widespread uptake and halt the spread of the disease. Working together, we can and will overcome the COVID-19 crisis.
